Exploration Four
The story that affected me most was of Nick Chirls, I really saw how much the loss of his mother affected him and his relationship between his father and himself. I am very close to my mother she was a single mother in the early parts of my life, while my father went through a mid life crisis. I can only imagine how differently his life would of been if his mom survived that day or was not involved completely. Would he have followed the same career path of his mother or have gone a different route? I can't even imagine how it would feel to not see my mom every again. Nick doesn't believe shes gone "I expect her to walk onto the subway at any time". Because she used to travel the same way as him he thinks everyday he will see her in passing rushing to an appointment.
The time lapse over the eight years was a strength because it showed how the people thought processes changed over time. Some of them went from terribly sad thinking they would never recover to having a happy life again. It also showed the victim's lives improve and change for the better allowing them to move on.
The most important thing I took away from this documentary was that cherish life and do not take anything for granted. You never know when something unexpected is going to tear your life apart. When the people that died on 9/11 woke up that morning they had no idea what was going to happen that day or did their families. Just a few hours later their lives would change forever.
Cory thanks for getting us started! I thought Nick's story was one of the most powerful. I think he had the most confusion and rage, maybe because of his age and the fact his Dad remarried so quickly. I believe that anger held onto for too long is super destructive and I was so relieved to see him be able to deal with it and let some things go. It's a great reminder to us all, but easier said that done. Humans don't like to let go much, because anger can become a habit and part of our identity very quickly. But it's better to resolve it, no matter how difficult. Nick's a brave dude.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you that people should cherished their life and not take anything for granted. Because even though today we might feel we have it all and feel invincible, we are not guaranteed anything.
ReplyDeleteIt was especially sad for Nick because of the fact that he basically lost his father as well as his mother. Growing up without one parent is hard enough, especially when she was gone so suddenly, but without a father to turn to probably made it very tough.
ReplyDeleteI didn't choose Nick to be my most powerful story but his story was second. I couldn't even imagine being on this Earth without my mom. It had to be so hard and especially since his father remarried so quickly. I also agree that the time lapse strengthened the documentary. It was amazing to see how much they changed.
ReplyDeleteCory i really enjoyed reading your exploration about Nick. I thought his story was really powerful because you saw the pain he had in the very beginning. Throughout time though you see him heal and become a person even though his mother died. I couldn't imagine not having my mom for those tough days when I just need someone to talk to and be able to calm me down. For him to get through that shows a lot about him as person and thats really great to see.
