Exploration Six
The character that I am most invested in right now would be Ma. She is a very strong woman but she has a huge and kind heart, I guess she reminds me of my mom a little bit. My mom would do anything for anyone and that kind of is how Ma acts and mind is set. I believe the most important conflict is the police abusing the people in the Hoovervilles. On page 338, "Well, when the cops come in, an' they come in all a time, that's how you want ta be. Dumb-don't know nothin'. Don't understan' nothin'. That's how the cops like us. Don't hit no cops. That's jus' suicide. Be bull-simple." It's awful how people have to act dumb just so they wont get hurt or in trouble. This ties in with the theme about police abuse. Those police were abusing everyone for stupid things just so they could get paid extra and keep their jobs. Today I don't believe police abuse is as bad but it is still out there and this book has made me see how some people who aren't as fortunate as others have to live and how they are treated. Grant it some people brought it upon themselves but others have really struggled and some try but others not so much. This has just showed me that our country isn't the beautiful "land of the free" that everyone makes it out to be. Most people in the U.S. are not free but imprisoned by the upper class and the wealthy.
