1. The ending of the book shows how the family was distraught but yet has the will power to continue to survive and help lift up others. Ma Joad's actions saves the family and puts them in a barn to help save a sick man. Rose of Sharon's actions are what saves a mans life and a young boys father and keeps a small family together. It shows that during tough times the few strong and heroic people in the world will go through desperate measures to help others and themselves. Her smile is showing how she is happy that she could help but mysterious because of the act she is doing to help someone.
2. The book ends with the Joad's still facing a rough road ahead. The family has so far handled every challenge with strength and will power to get what they need to survive. They will survive by doing whatever is necessary to do so. We leave them in a barn with a sick man and Rose of Sharon showing her true heroic self.
What do you think Rose of Sharon's smile means though, as far as Steinbeck's point? The way I look at Rose of Sharon is as follows - round and round! She's pregnant, and she changes her mindset throughout the novel. At first she'll believe anything the family - especially Connie says. But as time progresses, she get more rational and reasonable. In other words, she's not heroic, but she becomes heroic.
