I interpret the ending as a finally act of strength for these two woman. They both have lost so much in this novel that this ending was needed. It showed the true power of these women, they saw what needed to be done and did it. They saved that mans life and proved that they will not quit on others or themselves. It leaves me with good feelings concerning where the Joads will go from here. They might not become millionaires but I see them succeeding in life. Rose of Sharon's smile is mysterious because after all she had been through that day she was still able to nurious a life at the end of the day, it may of not been her child but it was still a life saved, and secretly she feels at peace with herself.
In the future I see the Joad's surviving the times. They will power past any obstacle due to their strength as a family. The family's character is what makes them such a force to be reckoned with. They may have dwindling numbers but they are as strong as a brick house. You may take a few bricks away but the walls still stand strong. They will just get by in the future, like they have been doing. I do not see them becoming wealthy but they will get through the depression. They will be a little bruised and battered but they will come out alive.
I like your view on the two women. I agree that they both needed the the good feelings that come from serving others. I also believe that they will make it too. The Joad family has already been through so much that there's not much they can't do.
